Graphite and acrylics on Fabriano
I think of this drawing as a portrait that explores memory, identity and heritage. The central figure which is an elderly woman, radiates joy. Her smile repeats in “cutouts,” just as the resilience and recurrence of happiness across time and experience. I often associate paraffin lanterns with ancestral wisdom and the storytelling that happened around them. They illuminated more than just space, they gave us access to knowledge, home and legacy, much like the keys. These fragments create a visual language of lived history, where everyday objects hold deep meaning. The contrast between realism and flat color, especially the earthy mustard and green tones, introduces a tension between the tangible and the remembered. It situates the woman in a space that feels both grounded and surreal, reflecting how we carry the past within us,not as a single, clear narrative, but in layered, symbolic pieces.
