I realized we don’t often pause to celebrate men especially fathers who carry so much ,silently. This painting grew from that thought, a father lifting his four children or rather his children hanging on to him, while also still trying to lift himself ( because no one else will). Part of the inspiration came from Johannes Phokela’s work which spoke to me as the slavery of black men to money, forced by the burden of provision(demanded of them by survival, expectations and social roles.) My Artwork shifts that weight into a kind of reverence. An ode to fathers whose strength lies not only in provision but also in rising. Everyday is Father’s Day too.
